Position Description

The mission of Navos is to improve the quality of life of people vulnerable to mental illness by providing a broad continuum of trauma informed care with a focus on recovery and resilience. Navos responds to the needs of people with mental illness in King County. Services are targeted to those who live at or near poverty, often as a result of their mental illness. About the Position:

The ARNP is responsible for providing routine medical care in a 60-bed psychiatric inpatient facility, with predominantly involuntary admissions. The ARNP conducts complete medical examinations, diagnoses medical conditions, initiated medical treatment for routine problems, and refers patients to other care providers for medical problems that cannot be treated at the Facility. The ARNP consults with the physician as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.
 
• Performs routine history and physicals for new admissions.
• Manages patients with chronic medical illnesses and evaluates patients for acute complaints.
• Works directly within and interdisciplinary team, which includes staff psychiatrists, the medical physician, RN’s, LPN’s and mental health specialists.
• Accurately dictates H & P’s, and appropriately documents other medical care given.
• Makes appropriate clinical decisions based on abnormal lab values and refers patient to a specialist as needed for non-routine care.
• Understands when consultation with a physician is appropriate based on medical complexity and other factors.
• Provides safe, efficient and quality care to all of the clients
• Supports a system-wide understanding of trauma prevalence, impact and trauma informed care.
• Fosters healing, hopeful, honest and trusting relationships for consumers and employees; Values consumer voice, choice and self-advocacy.
• Demonstrates a commitment to cultural competence.
• Promotes a safe, calm and secure environment with supportive care and family-driven services that are trauma specific and promote recovery and wellness.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Follows organization infection control policies and procedures. At risk for exposure to blood borne pathogens.

Position Requirements:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • Experience providing medical care in family practice, geriatric and young adult populations.  
• Experience working with mentally ill populations preferred.
• Thorough knowledge of psychotropic medica¬tions, their administration, and the assessment and treat¬ment of side effects.  
• Ability to provide educational supervision and case con¬sultation.  
• A knowledge of theories of human behavior, personality development, and psychological and physical causes of mental disor¬ders; under¬standing of principles and methods of intervention.  
• Familiarity with rules, regu¬lations and professional standards governing the treatment of mentally ill clients.
• Interested and able to provide care for a chronic population with multiple medical and psychiatric problems.
• Skilled and knowledgeable regarding treat of routine medical problems, able to recognize non-routine problems and refer for appropriate treatment.
• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting, according respect to others based on knowledge and experience, as well as discipline.  
• Ability to tolerate the stress of a busy inpatient psychiatric care setting.  
• Ability to interact with consumers with sensitivity, tact and respect; as well as firmness, when necessary.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters.

Education and/or Experience:

Advanced Nursing Degree; prior work experience in psychiatric settings is preferred.  Experience with both acutely and chronicle mentally ill adults preferred. Must have current, thorough familiarity with psychotropic medications, their prescribing, administration, and appropriate monitoring, including the assessment and management of potential side effects.

Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations:
Must possess a Washington State RN & NP license, as well as current federal DEA/NPI licenses, active Medicare provider status and ongoing Board Certification.
