Critical Care Physician Assistant – MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital

    Job Summary - Performs quality patient care to patients in a critical care unit. Admits patient and participates in daily rounds with intensivist/cardiologist and/or attending physician. Performs advanced procedures in conjunction with the attending physician. These are full-time, 36-hour per week, positions including rotating day/night/weekend 12-hour shifts.

     

    Minimum Qualifications -

     

    • Education/Training - Graduation from a Physician Assistant Program accredited by ARC-PA (Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant). Bachelors degree; Masters degree preferred.
    •  Experience - 1-year inpatient experience or previous health care experience in a critical care setting.
    • License/Certification/Registration - NCCPA (National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants) certification. Current license with the Maryland Board of Physicians. Current BLS (Basic LifeSupport)/ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification.
    • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities - Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to function calmly and effectively under pressure; able to rapidly assess a patient condition and lead a multidisciplinary team; hands-on competence with Electronic Medical Records (EMR); manual dexterity required to obtain and maintain credentialing for advanced procedures. Working knowledge of the specialized equipment in the critical care areas. Obtains and maintains credentialing for advanced procedures to include (at a minimum): central venous access, arterial lines, paracentesis and intubation.

       

      Primary Duties and Responsibilities -

       

      • Acquires and maintains bedside ultrasound skills.
      •  Actively co-manages critically ill patients including ventilator management, initiation of vasoactive medications, and management of complex metabolic disorders including shock syndromes, bleeding, sepsis, postoperative patients, cardiac disorders and acute kidney injury.
      •  Assesses and responds to diagnostic test results in a timely fashion.
      •  Assists intensivists with triage of patients to critical care units.
      •  Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
      •  Effectively communicates with the intensivist when patient status changes.
      •  Initiates routine medication, diagnostic, and therapeutic orders.
      •  Leads/participates in Rapid Response Team, Stroke Response Team, Code Team and holds debrief after each event, serving as the initial primary provider when attending to emergent patient needs on the medical/surgical floors and during off hours in the ICU in the absence of the critical care attending.
      • Obtains accurate history and physical, reviews medical records, develops and executes assessment and plan in conjunction with attending physician.
      • Participates in daily multidisciplinary rounds and modifying daily plan of care.
      • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams. Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Performs life saving procedures as appropriate. Initiates ACLS protocols.
      • Performs advanced procedures outside of the critical care unit as required for patient safety.
      • Performs other duties as assigned.
      • Performs procedures to include (at a minimum): central venous access, arterial lines, paracentesis, thoracentesis and intubation.
      • Provides education and training for students, new graduates and colleagues.
